Abstract
The methanol extract of buckwheat hull showed antimicrobial activity against bacteria. The extract was successively purified through solvent fractionation, silica gel adsorption chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, and octadecylsilane column chromatography. Further purification through high performance liquid chromatography gave two antimicrobial substances which were, respectively, identified as azelaic acid and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid through MS and NMR analyses. The compounds showed antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria at 200-500 §¶ of concentration using the paper disc method.
